The great Eddy Merckx was entering the 1972 racing season wearing the World Championship “Rainbow Jersey”. Attacking on the Poggio Merckx was untouchable. The Cannibal wildly descended into San Remo and rode down the “Via Roma” alone to claim a 9 second victory. Italian Gianni Motta won the field sprint for second place.
